Although health insurance is mandatory for all people working in the Netherlands or living in the Netherlands for more than four months, for international students, it is not always necessary to take out Dutch Health insurance. You don`t have to take out Dutch Health insurance if you are an EU citizen and possess an EU Health insurance card or if you have private health care insurance from your country of origin. However, if you intend to work in the Netherlands or if you do an internship, it might be necessary to take out Dutch health insurance even though you study in the Netherlands. As a student, you are most likely to be entitled to receive healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag), which most of the time covers the approximate monthly fee of your health insurance.
